Tottenham set a new record at
their temporary home of Wembley, although they are still
some way off the British record,
which was set nearly 50 years
ago.
Tottenham set a new English
record when they faced Monaco
in the Champions League on
Wednesday, with their gate of
85,011 the biggest ever for a
home side playing a club match
in the country.
Spurs have moved from White
Hart Lane to Wembley to allow
them such bumper attendances
in the Champions League ahead
of a lengthier move to the English
national stadium next season
while their regular ground is
redeveloped.
The previous mark was set by
Manchester City, when they
hosted Stoke City in an FA Cup
6th round clash at Maine Road
on March 3, 1934, which
attracted 84,467 spectators.
Spurs' mark, however, is some
distance off the British record,
which was set by Celtic, when
136,505 watched them win 2-1
against Leeds United in a
European Cup semi-final second-
leg clash in 1970.
